Copy Protection for DVD Duplication
Unauthorized copying and ripping of digital content robs owners and distributors of the revenue their products generate.
According to recent reports, illegal DVD copying can be broken down into four main categories: Stage Ones, Stage Twos, Stage Threes and Hardcore Rippers. As their names imply, Stage Ones are the least technical and often, least successful DVD rippers, or pirates. They tend to rip a low to medium volume of content, but their intent is normally social or casual in nature. These Stage Ones are the most likely to be deterred by Copy Protected content as they seldom use more than one tool or program to copy a disc and give up easily after a failure. This category purportedly accounts for nearly 60% of all illegal DVD copying and ripping.
Progressing through the stage twos and threes and finally landing into the Hardcore Rippers we account for only 5% of illegal copying. These are the more determined and successful rippers. They typically use multiple tools and are the most sophisticated as they commonly interact together and share information on online blogs and forums.
Previously, security and copy-protection has only been available using technology such as CSS encryption, a method reserved for large volume jobs. Today, an increasing amount of content is published in small quantities using “On Demand” fulfillment methods where content is burned to DVD, making large volume jobs a thing of the past for many content owners. For these content owners, there has not been a method readily available for protecting their DVD content from illegal copying and ripping.
